Please review our editing and coaching services below; you are welcome to contact us if you have questions about any of these options. We use, verbatim, the definitions of stylistic editing, copy editing, structural editing and proofreading established by Editors Canada (https://www.editors.ca/hire/definitions-editorial-skills).
Copy editing
Editing to ensure correctness, accuracy, consistency, and completeness. It includes:
- editing for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and usage
- checking for consistency and continuity of mechanics and facts, including anachronisms, character names, and relationships
- editing tables, figures, and lists
- notifying designers of any unusual production requirements
- developing a style sheet or following one that is provided
- correcting or querying general information that should be checked for accuracy
Copy editing
Editing to clarify meaning, ensure coherence and flow, and refine the language. It includes:
- eliminating jargon, clichés, and euphemisms
- establishing or maintaining the language level appropriate for the intended audience, medium, and purpose
- adjusting the length and structure of sentences and paragraphs
- establishing or maintaining tone, mood, style, and authorial voice or level of formality
Coaching
Our writing coaches are skilled and supportive, and have experience working with scholars who have English as an additional language. All writing coaches have at least one graduate degree, and most have PhDs. They are trained and supervised by our Senior Editor. They can help you:
- work through sticking points in your writing
- discuss your ideas to help you clarify and organize them
- identify general patterns of error, weaknesses, and strengths in your writing
- develop your understanding of style, grammar, and punctuation
- strengthen the structure of an argument
- improve your writing habits, or develop a new writing habit, and protect your writing time
- feel less isolated, and more motivated, focused, and encouraged
Timelines
It is never too early in a project to contact us. We can help you with all aspects of writing from planning and outlining to organizing, editing, and revising. We listen to you to understand and meet your editing and coaching needs.
Paperwork
We offer a form, if appropriate, to be completed by you and your advisor, acknowledging that professional editing services have been engaged and providing our assurance that the research and content remain solely yours.
If you are not sure which of our services would best suit you, please contact us and ask.
You will never be asked to pay for hours we have not worked, even if it means billing less than the original estimate. Prompt payment is expected.
